In the Galapagos. Each tour we did (kayaking, volcano, los tunneles) was occupied by a naturalist guide that knew everything about the flora and fauna of the Galapagos. To get the most out of the “Bio” part of the Bio-med program I suggest you take advantage of these guides and ask them all your questions. The animals are not scared of you at all there because of the strict no touching rule which allows for unique up-close interactions that you could never experience elsewhere!

Day 1: Isla Isabela

Students will arrive in the Galapagos in the early morning and take a two-hour boat ride to Isla Isabela. Once in Isabela, students will have time to walk around an amazing white beach, swim in the ocean and walk through a flamingo lagoon. The long sandy beach which runs along the town is perfect for viewing seabirds, iguanas, crabs and resting sea lions.

Day 2: Sierra Negra

An amazing hike will take you to Sierra Negra, the second biggest volcano in diameter in the world. The active Sierra Negra has a diameter of 18 miles and you can see the different paths that the lava has created. The students will hike up to Volcano Chico, an active crater from which you can see the whole Island, have a box lunch and admire the nature of the Galapagos.

Day 3: Kayak to Tintoreras

In the morning, students will visit the Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre where they will be able to observe tortoises of all ages and sizes. After lunch, students will kayak to the Tintoreras. The Tintoreras is a colony of white-tip sharks that can often be seen resting in a lava canal. Nearby, hundreds of marine iguanas can be observed since the Tintoreras is one of their main breeding sites. From the surface, students can easily view dozens of sea turtles, penguins and rays swimming in the water.

Day 4: Los Tuneles

Los Tuneles are a series of underwater caves and arcs formed from molten lava that has cooled and solidified over time. It is a spectacular site for scuba diving and well known as a natural paradise for the local wildlife.

Day 5: Tortuga Bay

Students will walk to Tortuga Bay, one of the most beautiful and well-conserved white sand beaches in the Galapagos Islands. The bay is home to sharks, marine iguanas, pelicans, flamingos and other seabirds. Students will then have the opportunity to kayak or snorkel at this spot.

Day 6: Goodbye Santa Cruz!

We take one more look at Santa Cruz and take the bus back to Baltra from where you will depart to Quito.
